Distractions

Writer's picture: Kaela SKaela S
"but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced."

Mark 4:19

Have you ever noticed that one day you were so filled with faith or ready to go after the dream in your heart, but then slowly, over time, you realized that the desire faded?

There could have been a time you put all your faith on something, and it didn’t happen. You were heartbroken and started to believe that maybe it’s less painful to not hope at all and just let whatever happens in life, happen. Your faith wasn’t lost all at once but disappointment after disappointment caused it to slip away from your grasp.

Maybe your job became more challenging and you started to direct all your efforts towards that.

Or, you scrolled through all the beautiful content on social media and thought that your voice wasn’t needed, and that it may be a better idea to just sit back and watch others live their dream than to spend energy and time following your own, because 1. Who knows if it’ll work? and 2. Where do you even start?

If we don’t pay attention, as the worries of life sneak in and distractions come, the size of our dream and faith can dwindle and we’ll look up and realize that we lost our focus and are settling.

I’ve been there. To be honest, I’m still crawling my way out.

I notice that sometimes people have major events that weaken their faith, like a death in the family or an undesirable diagnosis, but then there’s the mundane, small distractions and disappointments that pile up over time and make you forget about the fire you once had about who God is and what you felt called to do.

Life is a breath. A short amount of time and those little distractions can easily turn into years wasted. Those little things can take your attention away from the bigger mission.

Let’s refocus.

For me, refocusing looks like reading the Bible to try to begin to comprehend God’s love for us, praying, building a faith-filled community, and reflecting on the life I desire to live and the steps I can take today to get me there.

Taking daily action towards your dream and building your faith doesn’t always have to look like a BIG thing.

Some days, it may just look like writing a sentence for a book you want to publish someday or crying out to God about those disappointments. Whatever it is to you, you’ll know, because as you continue to do it, you’ll slowly start to feel the warmth of the fire you once had.

Take some time to determine what you want your life to look like. Reflect on what has been distracting you. What daily actions can you take to reignite the flame of faith and work towards your dream?

In this time, I’m praying that God gently reminds all of us of how far we’ve come, and all the good work that’s left to do. I pray that He shows us what actually matters and gives us the strength and desire to do what’s needed.
