What Are You Looking At?

Confession!!

I watch an unusual amount of dog videos on IG 😬 they’re all so cute and I am so, SO close to getting one myself. (I’m either getting a dog or a tattoo this year but some lifelong commitment will be made - okay?!)

There was one challenge recently where the dog parent would put a plate of food in front of their pet and tell them to wait. The owner would walk away briefly and allow them to eat it once they came back.

Many pups would devour the food once their owner was out of sight (which is a message in and of itself) BUT, there were a disciplined few that would successfully wait until their parent came back, and gave them the “ok” to eat.

Because I watched so many of these videos, I noticed a trend. Oftentimes, the pups that were able to make it through the painstakingly, long wait period without eating the food, were the dogs that kept their eyes off the food, and on their pet parent. The dog’s eyes would follow their parent as they left the room and once their human was out of sight, the dog would still be looking at the last place they saw their owner, in hopes they would come back.

And not to compare us to dogs - BUT I think there’s a lesson to be learned here.

There may be something you desperately desire in your life — a job, a spouse, or that new opportunity that you’ve been praying for that can’t seem to come quick enough.  I’m learning that the more you stare at what’s missing or what you don’t have or that temptation in front of you, often, the more miserable you become or, the more likely you are to make a bad decision based on a temporary feeling.

Keep your eyes on the Lord. Looking to Him to bring you peace, fulfillment, and love. You’ll make it through this. Find the good in where you are. Place your hope in Him. Hoping that what He promised, He will deliver. Hope in knowing that whether in this life, or the next, you’ll see the reward of your faithfulness.

Keep watch as He satisfies your needs and fills you with peace. He’s blessed us all greatly and in the midst of the discomfort, keep looking at the Father of Lights who gives every good and perfect gift, and promised to never leave you.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18
16That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. 17For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
