Relationships

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NLT)

“9 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. 11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? 12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”

The Value of Friendship.

It seems that loneliness is something that quite a few people deal with nowadays. I recently came out of a long period of solitude myself. It’s not that I didn’t have people to talk to, it’s just that after a series of failed friendships, I started to question if I was qualified for them and began to push people away because of the negative views I had of myself from those previous relationships.

This led me to spending months of time alone. It wasn’t all bad….I had time to find out who I was and more of who God is, but I still knew that I needed community.

After some time, I started to realize that God was placing me in healthy environments to create friendships and I decided to open up and accept the fact that I deserved to have healthy relationships regardless of what my past experiences looked like.

The friendships that I have now helped me to realize that what I value in life is not crazy, but normal. They’re filled with encouragement and we created a safe space for each other’s flaws while also challenging each other to be the best version of ourselves. I’m rediscovering what fun is and am constantly learning that laughter makes life a little bit better.

Some things you’re meant to do alone, and some moments are best when shared with a loving community. I hope we all develop the ability to discern the difference.

So, for the one that feels lonely and undeserving of relationships, I pray that you’re surrounded by life-giving friendships who support and encourage the best version of you. Don’t let past relationship failures keep you from opening up, trying again, and accepting the warm love of friendship. You absolutely deserve a healthy community.

And for the one that already has a beautiful family of friends, I hope you never forget how valuable those people are in your life and don’t hesitate to remind them every now and then.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for the relationships that I have. Fill me with love so that I can share it with those around me. Help me to heal from past relationship issues and allow me to understand that I deserve a loving community. Bless me with friends that are following You and help me to love them well. In Jesus name, Amen.
